This card is interesting to me because more than representing the dark forces outside of ourselves, I feel it points to our own inner darkness which, if not integrated and expressed properly, can run amok in our inner psyche.

I chose to show the devil here as a Luciferian type character because I feel it most properly aligns with the real meaning of the card. This character is bonded in chains because this card represents the many ways in which our own self-bondage is preventing us from growth.

This card is also about the harmony or battle between the conscious, civilized mind and the animistic, instinctive subconscious. It's about a balance between the light and dark, a motif that runs through many of the cards. Here, more visibly than in the other cards, however, we are forced to look at the shadow side of ourselves and are challenged to own it and welcome it. Through this we realize our dark selves no longer have the same power over us and we can breathe lighter at the confrontation of our deep truths.

Puppet

Have a look at the Devil card it actually shows the Devil with the horns and there are two puppets at its feet. In this card you will notice that you are one of these puppets. You are not the Devil. If you look closer you will see that your hands are not tied. You will also see that the chains are around your neck and it says sometimes you behave like a puppet.

Create

You create Devils to blame for what you are not happy about in your situation. If you are unhappy about the way your life is going or your relationship, or your career, etc. it says you will sit and feel sorry for yourself and create Devils to blame for the situation that you are in.

Blame

You say if he had not appeared, if she had not said that, if that had not happened I would not be feeling this way. It actually says you must stop creating Devils to blame for what you are not happy about.

Take charge

You may be a puppet, and you are being pulled about by these Devils that you create but your hands are not tied, and you can free yourself from the strings of the Devil if you choose to do so. So its says go ahead and free yourself from the puppet strings and move on with your life, take charge of your life, that is what it is called for.
