This card's symbolism is fairly straightforward, but can be interpreted in several ways, seldom, however, meaning physical death. Even so, the image of the grim reaper typically adorns the card to signal to us that death (of many kinds) is the price we pay for existing in time.

More often than not, the death is metaphorical, representing a death of the inner self, or a death of an era in time, etc. The child is representative (and holds Death's hand) because with death always eventually comes a renewal of some kind or a rebirth.

Perhaps physically if we ascribe to reincarnation, but also in a new birthing of our soul after trials and tribulations, or a new period in time when we lay the past to rest and begin anew.

Negative situation

However, when death comes up crossed with nice cards; you may get the sun, the wheel of fortune etc. in the spread, in that instance death does not mean that you are going to be thrown in a situation of turmoil. Then death means that there is a negative situation in your life that needs to end.

Negative

It could be slightly negative and you may not even at this point in time perceive it as negative, but it says it is definitely time for a ending. This might mean a present situation in order to facilitate a new beginning. So in that case death actually means a brand new start, a brand new beginning.
